July 1, 2019How It’s Made: Cane Sugar
Do you know, most of the white sugar we eat nowadays was once cane sugar? And cane sugar can be made at home with super simple equipment? Today, we will follow grandma’s direction to see how cane sugar is made! Have a look below!
if you are an avid Thai food lover, you probably notice one thing, a lot of Thai dishes are sweeter in comparison to other cuisines! They are SWEET!
YES! We do use a lot of sugar! Whether in chili dip, curries, papaya salad, or even in Tom Kah Gai soup, sugar is one of the MUST-HAVE ingredients, or else it doesn’t have the same flavor!! Mainly, the sweetness counteracts the other flavors and gives the dish another complex flavor with a balanced touch! You know that flavor when it’s sour but not too sour, and salty but not too salty! it’s all about the balance here! And you know what we use to render the sweetness?
A common answer would be SUGAR. But before white sugar comes along, traditional Thai sugar is made from plants like sugar cane, palm trees, or even coconut trees. Grandma, especially, has a finding memory of sugar cane as she used to plant sugar cane on our land before we made a switch to an organic farm!
Thanks to Grandma, we are able to show you exactly how cane sugar is traditionally made from the start till the end, following grandma’s instruction! have a look and let us know!
